Joshua S. Vincent diary and related material, 1846-1951.

Consists of Vincent's diary (ca. 100 p.), dated July 20, 1846 to Nov. 25, 1847, along with secondary material prepared and collected by Christopher D'Amanda. The diary describes Vincent's voyage from Elmira, New York to San Francisco via Cape Horn aboard the ship Susan Drew. Vincent describes military and daily life in Monterey, where he was stationed as a member of Colonel Stevenson's First Regiment of the New York Volunteers in the Mexican War. Secondary material consists of a bound thesis by D'Amanda entitled, "History Four Term Paper: Joshua S. Vincent," which includes diary annotations by Ben F. Dixon, Curator of the San Diego Historical Society. Includes a 1951 typed transcription of the diary by D'Amanda; correspondence with libraries, research collections, and Vincent's granddaughter related to his research; research notes; and a typed rough draft of the thesis.
